New technologies, expansion, and industry recognition cement Calumet Electronics as industry leader

CALUMET, Mich. (January 28, 2022) In its 2021 Year in Review, Michigan-based Calumet Electronics Corporation (“Calumet”) marks a successful year of growth and innovation, distinguished by technology advancements, job creation, campus expansion, and industry recognition. The 53-year-old Printed Circuit Board (PCB) company continues to propel the U.S. electronics industry forward with trusted U.S.-based manufacturing and future-focused technology innovations.

Calumet is enabling the advancement of next-generation electronics systems with advanced additive manufacturing processes, such as Averatek’s patent pending A-SAP™ manufacturing technology. Calumet is also evolving technologies for Ultra-High-Density (uHDI) PCBs and High-Density Build-Up technologies to produce IC substrates utilized in microelectronics advanced packaging.

Despite worldwide challenges due to the pandemic, Calumet Electronics’ business is thriving. A recent campus expansion added 45,000 square feet of manufacturing space, new headquarters, and an administration building. Over the past year, the company hired more than 50 new employees and expects to add more positions in the year ahead.

Dr. Meredith LaBeau, who was named Calumet’s Chief Technology Officer in July, is a champion for the company’s early-career engineers. She notes, “Calumet Electronics is committed to nurturing new talent and helping them build meaningful careers that will have significant impact on the domestic industry. It’s exciting to guide the new generation of young leaders who will take our industry to the next level.”

In 2021, global electronics trade association, IPC, presented CEC with two awards. The organization bestowed its highest corporate honor, the Peter Samarian Corporate Recognition Award, to Calumet for its contributions to IPC and industry leadership. In addition, Calumet R&D Managing Engineer Audra Thurston received IPC’s Rising Star Award, presented annually to a select few of the world’s best and brightest young professionals. Additionally, Northrop Grumman presented Calumet with its World Class Team Supplier Award. Also in 2021, Calumet recertified its AS9100D, Nadcap Merit, and IPC 1791 Trusted Supplier accreditations.

Calumet Electronics continues to focus on the future of the PCB industry — the breakthrough technology that supports the next-generation electronic systems that keep our nation safe and secure. One fast-growing frontier is aerospace. Calumet is working closely with Aerospace Industry Association of Michigan (AIAM) to identify new opportunities to bring value to the sector and grow Michigan’s aerospace industry. In May, LaBeau and Thurston served as presenters and panelists for AIAM’s “Women in Aerospace” event, geared toward students interested in STEM careers.

Calumet also supports the industry through the United States Partnership for Assured Electronics (USPAE) and Printed Circuit Board Association of America (PCBAA), organizations actively engaged in strengthening the U.S. electronics manufacturing industry.

Calumet’s President and CEO Steve Vairo notes, “There are a number of exciting sectors where we’re gaining a foothold. Aerospace is just one of them. Calumet Electronics is able to keep pace with the rapid advancements that are a part of many fast-moving industries. We’re nimble and flexible, which is exactly what these innovators need in a manufacturer. This was a bright year for our company. We expect even more for 2022.”
